Why Your Landing Page Isn't Converting: 14 Fixes That Turn Ad Clicks Into Leads

If you are paying for clicks and getting few enquiries, the ads are rarely the problem. Here are the conversion benchmarks to aim for and the fourteen fixes we apply to landing pages that consistently double lead volume without spending another dollar on traffic.

The problem is almost never the ads

A business owner calls us because Google Ads "doesn't work." The account shows 400 clicks last month and 6 leads. That is a 1.5 percent conversion rate. The ads are doing their job; people are clicking. The page they land on is losing 98 out of every 100 visitors the business paid for.

Fixing that page from 1.5 percent to 6 percent quadruples leads on the same ad budget. Nothing else in marketing offers that return, which is why conversion work should come before more spend.

What good looks like

Benchmarks compiled across thousands of lead-generation pages in 2025 and 2026 put the cross-industry median around 2 to 4 percent for dedicated landing pages, roughly double what general website pages achieve. The top quarter of pages convert above 5 percent and the top tenth above 11 percent. Industry matters: home services and legal pages often run at 7 to 9 percent, financial services around 8 percent, and B2B software closer to 3 to 4 percent because the decision is bigger.

Two practical rules follow. If your dedicated landing page converts under 3 percent, something is broken and fixable. If you are sending paid traffic to your homepage, building a real landing page is the single highest-return change available.

14 fixes, in the order we apply them

1. Match the message to the ad

The headline must restate the promise the visitor clicked. If the ad says "Same-day furnace repair in Ottawa," the page headline says "Same-day furnace repair in Ottawa," not "Welcome to Northwind Heating." Mismatch is the number one cause of instant bounces.

2. Make the page load in under two seconds on a phone

Most Canadian paid traffic is mobile. Compress images, remove unused scripts, avoid heavy sliders and chat widgets that block rendering, and host on fast infrastructure. Every second of delay costs conversions. (Google Think with Google)

3. One page, one action

A landing page has one job. Remove the main navigation, footer link farms and every other exit. The only clickable things should be the form, the phone number and perhaps an anchor to more detail.

4. Put the offer and the action above the fold

Headline, one-sentence supporting line, primary call to action and phone number visible without scrolling, on a phone. The visitor should be able to convert in the first five seconds if they are ready.

5. Say what happens next

"Get a quote" is vague. "Get a written quote within 2 hours" or "Book a free 15-minute consultation" tells the visitor what they are agreeing to and removes fear.

6. Cut the form down

Name, phone or email, and one qualifying question. That is it. Every extra required field lowers completions. Ask for the rest on the follow-up call. For higher-value services, a two-step form (ask the easy qualifying question first, contact details second) often lifts completions further.

7. Add tap-to-call and track it

In trades, healthcare and legal, half or more of leads prefer to call. A sticky tap-to-call button on mobile and call tracking so those calls are counted as conversions. (Google Ads Help) Without call tracking, your reported conversion rate is roughly half of reality and Google's algorithms optimize toward the wrong people.

8. Prove it quickly

Trust signals near the call to action: star rating with review count, two or three short testimonials with names and cities, certifications and licences, years in business, guarantees, insurance, "Google Verified" or association badges. Prospects are looking for a reason to believe; give them several within one screen.

9. Show real photos

Your team, your trucks, your work, your office. Stock photos of models in headsets lower trust, especially with Canadian audiences who can spot them instantly.

10. Handle the objections on the page

Price ("Most repairs from $189"), timing ("Appointments available today"), risk ("No-obligation quote"), and process ("Here's how it works: 1, 2, 3"). Each unanswered objection is a reason to leave.

11. Write for skimming

Short paragraphs, descriptive subheadings, bullet points for features, bold for key facts. Nobody reads a landing page; they scan it for the answer to "is this for me and what do I do next?"

12. Localize

Name the city and neighbourhoods you serve. Show a local phone number. Mention local details: regional rebates, climate, regulations. A page that clearly serves "Kelowna and West Kelowna" converts better than one that serves "your area."

13. Follow up in minutes, not hours

The page's job is done when the form is submitted; the lead's value is decided in the next five minutes. Route submissions to text and email instantly, and use a missed-call text-back. Response speed is the biggest conversion lever after the page itself.

14. Test one thing at a time

Once the basics are fixed, run A/B tests on headline, offer, form length and hero image. Change one element, run to statistical confidence (usually a few hundred conversions per variation), keep the winner, repeat. Small compounding wins turn a 6 percent page into a 10 percent page over a quarter.

A quick diagnostic

Look at your landing page on your phone right now and answer honestly:

  • Does the headline repeat what the ad promised?
  • Can you call or submit in under five seconds without scrolling?
  • Does it load before you get impatient?
  • Are there fewer than four required form fields?
  • Is there a star rating, a testimonial and a certification visible near the button?
  • Are there any links that take the visitor somewhere else?

Three or more "no" answers explain your conversion rate.

What this looks like in practice

A Mississauga dental clinic was sending Google Ads traffic for implants to its homepage, converting at 1.8 percent. We built a dedicated implant page with a matching headline, a two-step form, tap-to-call, before-and-after photos, financing options above the fold and three patient reviews. Same ads, same budget. Conversion rate moved to 6.9 percent within six weeks and cost per booking fell by more than 40 percent. The full case study has the numbers.

Every lead generation engagement at Better Businesses includes landing page design and conversion optimization, because buying clicks for a page that leaks is money spent twice. If your ads are producing clicks but not customers, send us the URL and we will tell you exactly where the leak is.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good landing page conversion rate?
For lead-generation landing pages, the cross-industry median is roughly 2 to 4 percent, a good page converts at 6 to 10 percent, and the top 10 percent convert above 11 percent. Home services, legal and financial pages tend to run higher; B2B software runs lower. Below 3 percent almost always signals a fixable mismatch or friction problem.
Should I send Google Ads traffic to my homepage?
No. Dedicated landing pages that match the ad's promise convert at roughly double the rate of general website pages. The homepage serves every visitor and every purpose; a landing page serves one visitor with one intent and one action.
How many fields should a lead form have?
As few as you need to qualify and respond: typically name, phone or email, and one qualifying question. Each additional required field reduces completions. Ask for detail after the first contact, not before.
How fast does a landing page need to load?
Aim for under two seconds on a mobile connection. Conversion rates fall measurably with every additional second, and most paid traffic in Canada is on mobile devices.
