Tutoring and Education Business Marketing in Canada: Cost Per Enrolment and Exam Season

Canadian parents shortlist a tutor in the days after a report card, not on a slow browse. Here is the enrolment system for 2026: a profile built on course codes, feeder school pages, and campaigns timed to EQAO, diploma and ministerial exam windows.

A parent in Mississauga or Laval starts looking for a tutor on a Tuesday evening, a day or two after a report card or a message from a teacher. That parent types "math tutor near me" and reads the map pack. BrightLocal's 2025 consumer survey found roughly 83 percent of consumers use Google to find local businesses, ahead of Yelp at about 44 percent and Facebook at 40 percent. Your Google Business Profile, not your homepage, is the storefront.

The same survey found about 92 percent of consumers read reviews before a first visit, weighting recent ones most heavily, so a centre with eight reviews from two years ago loses to one with sixty from this term, and the share of consumers asking an AI assistant for local recommendations jumped from about 6 percent to 45 percent in a year. AI builds the shortlist; reviews close it.

Federal counts from ISED put Canada at roughly 37,000 educational services businesses, about 41 percent of those employers with fewer than five staff, so nearly every competitor is owner-operated. (Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada ISED) Technavio forecasts the private tutoring market here growing by roughly USD 5.4 billion between 2025 and 2029. Kumon runs more than 26,000 centres globally and Oxford Learning has locations in over 100 Canadian communities, while free board-delivered tutoring competes with both.

This guide covers tutoring centres, independent tutors, test prep and supplementary education businesses serving Grades 1 through 12. For children under five the cycle runs on parental leave dates and provincial waitlist registries instead, which our daycare and childcare marketing guide covers.

Course codes and grade bands belong in your Google Business Profile

Whitespark's 2026 local search ranking factors survey puts Google Business Profile signals at roughly 32 percent of local pack weight, the largest single block. Choose a tutoring or education centre primary category, then list services the way a parent describes the problem: Grade 4 reading, Grade 9 math, MCR3U functions, Secondary 5 chemistry. One generic "tutoring" entry throws away the only place in the profile where course codes can appear.

Hours should show the slots families book: after school until 8 pm, Saturdays and holiday intensives. Seed the questions and answers section with the pricing and credential questions you field on the phone, point a booking link at your assessment form, and give a second location its own profile. Ongoing local SEO work keeps those signals fresh.

Report card week is when review requests get answered

Reviews carry roughly 20 percent of local pack weight in the same Whitespark survey, up from about 16 percent in its 2023 edition, and they are what a referred parent checks before calling. Gating, incentives and staff-written reviews breach Google policy.

The compliant version is a routine tied to the two moments a parent already feels the result: when the assessment report is delivered, and in the week after a report card that shows movement. Ask by text, with a direct link. One review naming the course and the size of the change does more than a dozen saying "great tutors". The Ad Standards Canadian Code of Advertising Standards requires clear disclosure when parent ambassadors receive free sessions, and our guide on earning more Google reviews in Canada has the scripts.

The seven facts parents will not phone you to find out

Most tutoring sites sell philosophy and hide the facts. Answer these on the page, in this order:

  1. Subjects and grades, named specifically, including course codes such as MCR3U or MHF4U.
  2. Whether tutors are certified teachers, subject specialists or university students, stated honestly when the roster is mixed.
  3. One to one or small group, and the student to tutor ratio.
  4. In centre, in home or online, and whether a family can switch mid term.
  5. What the free assessment measures.
  6. Pricing structure and what a typical month costs.
  7. Screening and vulnerable sector checks.

Canadian tutoring generally runs about $25 to $80 per hour in CAD, with elementary around $30 to $75 and secondary $55 to $100, while centre-based or teacher-delivered instruction commonly sits at $45 to $75 and up. A published range filters out wrong enquiries, and parents enrol with whoever replies first, so website development favours booking over gallery design.

Feeder schools, not city pages, define the catchment

Proximity drives the map pack, so a single-location centre realistically wins families within five to ten kilometres, not a whole city. Build one page per location with directions, parking and transit notes, then write for the few schools that send you students, naming the courses their students struggle with and whether they run semesters.

Build pages nobody else has. EQAO and OSSLT preparation in Ontario, Provincial Achievement Test and Diploma Exam prep in Alberta, Graduation Numeracy and Literacy support in British Columbia, and ministerial exam prep in Quebec are searched, sharply seasonal and close to uncontested. A "Kumon alternative" page is the other gap, framed as one to one instruction against worksheet programs, and safer on a page than in ad copy.

Education recorded the largest cost per click drop of any category

In the 2026 LocaliQ and WordStream benchmarks, education and instruction posted the largest cost per click decrease of any industry, down about 23 percent to roughly USD 4.80, with cost per lead near USD 77. Those are North American averages built mostly from United States campaigns, so treat them as a planning frame.

Planning input Canadian planning range
Search cost per click, education About CAD $6 to $7, converted from the benchmark
Cost per enquiry, competitive metro Roughly CAD $60 to $140, from the same data
Revenue per enrolled student, school year About CAD $2,000 to $5,000
Marketing spend, share of revenue 5 to 10 percent

Cap ad radii to the catchment and split campaigns across near-me intent, subject and grade terms, exam terms and summer programs, because each peaks in a different month and a May exam search carries a deadline an October one does not. A disciplined Google Ads program with call tracking beats a bigger budget spread evenly across the year.

School councils, immersion parents and the tuteur de francais gap

Word of mouth from parents and school staff still produces the most enrolments, so the digital job is making the referred parent find you in seconds and see proof matching what they heard. Families compare on Superprof and local parenting blogs, but a school council newsletter mention outperforms most paid placements. French demand is the most under-served segment outside Quebec: immersion parents, Franco-Ontarian communities and New Brunswick families search "tuteur de francais" and "aide aux devoirs" against a fraction of the English competition.

Advertising and professional conduct rules for Canadian tutoring businesses

This section is general information, not legal advice. Confirm specifics with a Canadian lawyer before publishing claims.

Performance claims are the biggest exposure. Under the federal Competition Act, enforced by the Competition Bureau, a claim such as "students improve two grade levels" requires adequate and proper testing completed before the claim is made, and corporate penalties under the civil deceptive marketing provisions can reach the greater of $10 million and 3 percent of annual worldwide gross revenues. (Competition Bureau Canada) Discount claims must also clear the ordinary selling price rules, so "regular $2,000, now $999" is actionable if the program never sold at $2,000. (Competition Bureau Canada) Email and SMS fall under CASL, which treats an enquiry as implied consent for a limited window rather than a permanent list add; our CASL compliance guide has the mechanics.

Quebec changes the creative, not only the translation. Sections 248 and 249 of Quebec's Consumer Protection Act prohibit commercial advertising directed at children under 13, judged by the Office de la protection du consommateur on the purpose, presentation and placement of the ad, so cartoon tutors, kid-voiced testimonials and student-facing social creative sit in the risk zone while parent-facing copy generally does not. (Office de la protection du consommateur Québec) Charter of the French Language requirements for websites, advertising and signage apply on top, as our Bill 96 guide explains.

Credential and curriculum wording is the education-specific trap. Curriculum is provincial, so "aligned with the Ontario curriculum" is defensible if true, while "ministry approved" or "accredited" is not unless you hold that designation. Ontario's College of Teachers publishes a Find a Teacher register any parent can search to confirm an Ontario Certified Teacher's status and qualifications. (Ontario College of Teachers) Ontario also restricts credit granting: private secondary schools may issue credits toward the Ontario Secondary School Diploma only after ministry inspection, so a centre without it advertises support for a course, not credit for it. EQAO, diploma exams and ministerial exams are the media calendar

Four windows carry the enrolment year. Mid-August to late September is the largest, so budgets, landing pages and profile posts go live in early August. Early to mid November is the highest-intent moment of all, because parents have just been handed written evidence in a progress report. January is the second peak on semester changes, and late June to mid-August is the trough for weekly tutoring and the peak for camps.

Provincial testing is the fifth window, and it has no single national date. EQAO runs the Grade 9 mathematics assessment in a winter and a spring window, and scheduled the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test in a November window for 2026 to 2027. (Education Quality and Accountability Office EQAO) Alberta offers diploma exam sittings in November, January, April, June and August, June the largest, and cancelled the January 2026 sitting, so confirm the current schedule before spending against it. British Columbia sets provincial windows for the Grade 10 numeracy and literacy assessments, commonly late autumn and January. Quebec runs ministerial examination sessions in January, June and August, the main Secondary 4 and 5 session in June, and those exams count for half the final grade, which is why Quebec demand climbs hardest in May. Build a page and a campaign per assessment, releasing budget six weeks before each window.

October and February are when churn shows up, so nurture spending matters more than new-lead spending. Quebec's refundable tax credit for children's activities is a fair conversion lever when described accurately: 20 percent of eligible fees to a maximum of $500 per child, about $100 back, for qualifying programs of at least eight consecutive weeks, under Revenu Quebec conditions parents should confirm.

Cost per enrolled student, retained weeks and a 90-day build

Track cost per enrolled student and retained weeks, not clicks. At CAD $100 per enquiry and a 30 percent enrolment rate you pay about $330 for a student worth roughly $3,000 in a first school year, about nine times acquisition cost. Retained weeks separates a healthy centre from a busy one: a week-six departure cost the same to acquire as a June finisher. Expect 90 to 120 days before map positions settle.

Days Focus Outcome
1 to 30 Profile and tracking Services listed by course code, hours and photos fixed, review requests at two milestones
31 to 60 Site and offer Location and feeder school pages live, pricing visible, response under one hour
61 to 90 Demand capture Catchment-bounded campaigns, a page per assessment, a French page, cost per enrolment measured

Frequently asked questions

What should one new enrolment cost a Canadian tutoring centre to acquire?
Work back from the enquiry. North American education benchmarks put cost per click near USD 4.80 and cost per lead near USD 77, so plan on roughly CAD $60 to $140 per enquiry in a competitive metro. At a 30 percent enrolment rate that is about $330 per enrolled student, against CAD $2,000 to $5,000 of first-year revenue.
Can we advertise that students gain two grade levels in a term?
Only with adequate and proper testing completed before you publish the claim. The federal Competition Act treats unsupported performance claims as deceptive marketing, and penalties for corporations can reach the greater of $10 million and 3 percent of annual worldwide gross revenues. Keep pre and post assessment data and sample sizes on file, or describe your process instead and let parent testimonials carry the outcome.
How early does the September enrolment campaign have to be live?
Budgets, landing pages and Google Business Profile posts should be live by early August. Most Canadian schools return the Tuesday after Labour Day, with Quebec earlier and some western boards varying, and parents search heavily in the two weeks before and the four weeks after. Starting in September means paying peak prices for a window already half gone.
Can we say our tutors are certified teachers or that our courses earn credits?
Say it only where it is true and checkable. Ontario's College of Teachers publishes a Find a Teacher register where a parent confirms an Ontario Certified Teacher's status and qualifications. Credit wording is tighter: in Ontario, private secondary schools may grant credits toward the Ontario Secondary School Diploma only after ministry inspection, so advertise support for a course, not credit for it.
