Roofing Marketing in Canada: Hail Surges, Clearance Certificates and Cost Per Re-Roof

What changes when the product is a roof: catastrophe demand after a Prairie hailstorm, the WSIB clearance and RBQ numbers homeowners verify before they call, manufacturer certification tiers, and the cost of one signed re-roof in Canadian dollars.

BB Better Businesses Updated 9 min read

A Mississauga homeowner watching a ceiling stain spread, and a Calgary family two days after a hailstorm, both start on Google Search and Google Maps. BrightLocal's 2026 survey found Google is still the most used place to read local reviews, though its share of review discovery slipped from roughly 83% to about 71% in a year, and Whitespark's 2026 study found AI Overviews on about 68% of local-business queries.

Verification is where roofing separates from the other trades. Homeowners are coached to pull your WSIB or WCB clearance certificate, check an RBQ number in Quebec, demand a written workmanship warranty and refuse a large deposit. IBISWorld estimates roughly 8,600 roofing contractors work in Canada on revenue of about $13.9 billion in 2025.

The groundwork every trade shares sits in our contractor and home services guide. What follows is what changes when the product is a roof: catastrophe demand, adjusters, manufacturer tiers and an install season the thermometer closes.

Dated job photos and cleanup reviews build the roofing shortlist

Set the primary category to Roofing contractor and list services individually: replacement, repair, flat and low slope, metal, eavestrough, ice dam removal, emergency leaks. Define the service area by municipality rather than radius, and put licence numbers in the description.

Upload dated job photos labelled by neighbourhood and shingle line, because the house across the street is the closest thing roofing has to a showroom. Recency and owner replies now count for more than a large lifetime total, and roughly half of consumers read an AI generated review summary first. Nails in the driveway and a surprise plywood charge are the complaints that follow roofers into those summaries, so answer both in your replies and your quote.

Ask at the final walkthrough, while the new ridge cap is visible from the driveway. Our guide to Google reviews in Canada has the rest of the process.

The credentials page: WSIB clearance, RBQ number and your manufacturer tier

Build one page that does the verifying for the homeowner: a live link to your WSIB clearance certificate in Ontario or the WCB equivalent elsewhere, your liability certificate, your Toronto Building Renovator licence or RBQ number, and your GAF, IKO or BP tier.

Publish prices. Canadian price guides and contractor estimates put installed asphalt shingle replacement at roughly $3.50 to $7 per square foot, about $5,000 to $12,000 for a detached home in the Toronto area and $8,000 to $26,000 for a full replacement in Calgary. A page that explains the range, then itemizes what it includes (tear off, ice and water shield, underlayment, flashing, ventilation, permits) earns the quote request a call for pricing page loses. Our website development team builds around credentials and pricing.

Ranking for hail damage, ice dams and couvreur searches

The searches that produce signed jobs are specific: roof replacement cost Calgary, hail damage roof repair Calgary, ice dam removal Ottawa, flat roof repair Montreal for the duplex stock. In Quebec the volume sits in French under couvreur and réparation de toiture, and an English only site never appears for it.

To rank for those terms and be quoted by AI Overviews:

  1. Write a service plus city page for every combination you can crew, with local job photos and that municipality's permit process.
  2. Publish a certification page explaining what your GAF, IKO or BP tier means for the warranty.
  3. Add a glossary for square, deck, tear off, drip edge and actual cash value, the words homeowners search the moment an adjuster uses them.

Cost per signed re-roof, and why repair campaigns need their own budget

Almost every roofing benchmark you will read is American. LocaliQ puts roofing and gutters cost per lead near USD $228, about CAD $310, while Canadian advertisers report click costs 30 to 50% below US equivalents, as our Google Ads cost guide explains.

Benchmark Typical range (CAD) What it means for a roofer
Search cost per click Roughly $8 to $12 in larger metros A few dozen clicks per lead
Search cost per lead About $150 to $350 Priced for re-roofs, not repairs
Local Services Ads per lead Roughly $60 to $200 Priced per lead by Google, by region
Marketing budget 5 to 10% of revenue, more above $1M Averages near 8%

A $300 lead closed at 25 to 35% implies an acquisition cost near $900 to $1,200 on a job worth $5,000 to $26,000. That works on a replacement and fails on a $600 flashing repair, so split campaigns, budgets and landing pages by job type. Local Services Ads with the Google Guaranteed badge are open to roofers in major Ontario, Alberta and BC markets, and Google screens the owner, licence and insurance first.

HomeStars, the provincial associations and the manufacturer locators roofers forget

HomeStars reviews get cross-referenced against Google, so claim that profile, then add your provincial association: OIRCA in Ontario, ARCA in Alberta, RCABC in British Columbia. American guides point roofers to Angi and Thumbtack, which buy little here.

Manufacturer locators are the discovery path most roofers ignore, and the one directory a competitor cannot pay to join. GAF Master Elite requires roughly $1 million in liability coverage, years in business, licensing and annual renewal; IKO ROOFPRO tiers turn on annual squares installed and the share of IKO product used; BP Certified Roofer is the only route to BP's extended warranties. Each publishes a homeowner facing locator that ranks for brand plus city searches, so the tier deserves its own page. Use the logo only while in good standing, and say plainly that the extended warranty covers materials, not workmanship.

Storm chasers set the trust bar you have to clear

Within days of a serious hailstorm, crews with out of province plates work hail belt neighbourhoods offering free inspections, and Canadian insurers including Aviva have warned homeowners about hailstorm chasers who promise to cover the deductible.

Turn that into positioning. Publish a page telling the homeowner what to verify: your local address and years in the market, your clearance and liability certificates, and in Alberta the prepaid contracting licence required before a contractor takes a deposit. Say in writing that your inspectors never knock uninvited. Add a storm documentation page describing how you photograph damage and meet the adjuster on site, because that work also arrives through preferred vendor networks weighing you against the crew that leaves in October. Alberta roofers report insurers moving older roofs to actual cash value at around 15 years, which shrinks payouts and pushes work toward cash paying customers and impact resistant upgrades.

Advertising rules: the licence you can name, the deductible you cannot absorb

This section is general information, not legal advice. Confirm details with your provincial regulator or a lawyer before changing contracts or ads.

Ontario. Roofing is not a compulsory trade and there is no provincial roofing licence, so a generic licensed roofer claim is misleading. (Skilled Trades Ontario) Name what you hold, such as the City of Toronto Building Renovator licence. WSIB coverage is compulsory for roofing contractors with workers and for independent operators, except those doing only homeowner-hired renovation work on existing homes, and homeowners can pull your clearance certificate free, so back a fully insured claim with it. (Workplace Safety and Insurance Board WSIB) A contract signed at the home is a direct agreement carrying a 10 day cooling off right, and Ontario has passed a Consumer Protection Act, 2023 that replaces the 2002 Act once proclaimed, so have that wording reviewed then. (Government of Ontario)

Alberta and British Columbia. Take payment in Alberta before the work is complete, after selling away from your place of business, and you need a Prepaid Contracting licence and financial security from Service Alberta; door knocking needs a Direct Selling licence, and the buyer's 10 day cancellation right runs to a year if the seller is unlicensed. (Government of Alberta) BC's Business Practices and Consumer Protection Act gives the same 10 day right, and Homeowner Protection Act licensing covers new home builders rather than re-roofing, so never advertise it as a roofing licence. (Consumer Protection BC)

Quebec. An RBQ contractor licence is mandatory and the number must appear on all advertising, including your website and trucks. (Régie du bâtiment du Québec RBQ) The guarantee plan administered by Garantie de construction résidentielle covers new residential buildings rather than re-roofing, so a replacement ad should not imply GCR coverage. Under the Charter of the French Language as amended by Bill 96, anything directed at Quebec must be in French and at least equivalent in prominence to any other language.

Federal. CASL governs the spring follow up to last autumn's quote list: implied consent runs two years from a purchase and six months from a quote request. Competition Act rules cover unsupported claims and fake or undisclosed employee reviews, which private parties have been able to seek leave to sue over since June 2025, so a lifetime warranty or a certification badge has to be accurate.

Insurance claims. Adjusting is regulated by bodies such as FSRA in Ontario and the Alberta Insurance Council, and absorbing a deductible is treated as fraud: advertise that you inspect, document and meet the adjuster, never that you handle the claim.

Hail catastrophe response and the temperature that closes your season

Asphalt shingles need sustained temperatures above roughly 5 to 10 C to seal, so replacement season runs April or May to October or November, while metal and repairs continue through the cold. A second surge comes in March and April when melting snow reveals winter leaks, as after the late March 2025 ice storm across Ontario and Quebec. Emergency leak and ice dam searches spike in midwinter, which is why a small always on budget beats going dark.

Alberta and the Prairies run on hail from June to August. The August 2024 Calgary storm caused insured losses of roughly $2.8 to $3.25 billion across more than 130,000 claims, over half of them auto, and left a roofing backlog measured in seasons. (Insurance Bureau of Canada IBC) A catastrophe is not a season, it is a 72 hour window: the campaign, the landing page and the documentation page have to exist before the storm, so the work on the day is postal code targeting and budget. The BC Lower Mainland runs on rain, wind and gutters instead. Front load paid spend into April to June and September to October, and keep the hail campaign paused and ready.

Cost per signed square, and the first 90 days

Give every channel its own tracking number and form source, move each lead through the same CRM stages (lead, inspection, quote, signed), and report cost per signed job and average job value monthly. Divide spend by squares installed as well, because that shows whether a quarter of small repairs ate the budget the replacement season earned.

Days Focus Deliverables

31 to 60 Visibility Service and city pages, glossary and FAQ content, HomeStars and association profiles, LSA screening

Frequently asked questions

What does it cost to win one signed re-roof in Canada?
Work back from the job rather than from a percentage. North American benchmarks put roofing search leads near CAD $310, and Canadian agencies commonly report $150 to $350, with Local Services Ads often landing between $60 and $200. At a 25 to 35% close rate, a $300 lead costs roughly $900 to $1,200 per signed job, which works on a replacement and fails on a small repair.
Can a Canadian roofer advertise that it handles the insurance claim or covers the deductible?
No. The Insurance Bureau of Canada and Canadian insurers warn homeowners against contractors who file claims or sign insurance documents for them, and adjusting is regulated by bodies such as FSRA in Ontario and the Alberta Insurance Council. Offering to waive or absorb a deductible is treated as fraud. Advertise that you inspect, document damage and meet the adjuster on site.
What can an Ontario roofer call itself when the province issues no roofing licence?
Ontario has no provincial roofing licence because roofing is not a compulsory trade, so a generic licensed roofer claim is misleading. Name what you actually hold, such as a City of Toronto Building Renovator licence. WSIB coverage is compulsory for roofing contractors, including sole proprietors and executive officers, so back any fully insured claim with a current clearance certificate.
How fast do hail campaigns need to be live after a Prairie storm?
Within about 48 hours. Crews with out of province plates work hail belt neighbourhoods the same week, and Canadian insurers have warned homeowners about them, so the first credible local name wins the inspection. Build the campaign, landing page and storm documentation page in advance, then switch on postal code targeting and raise budgets while claims are being filed.
