Pest Control Marketing in Canada: Bed Bug Intent, Wasp Season and PCP Rules
How Canadian pest control companies win the call: a media plan built on the tick, wasp and rodent calendar, licence and PCP numbers on the page, who pays in a rental, and CAD benchmarks per booked job.
Pest control is bought in a hurry, on a phone, by someone standing in the room where they found the problem. Searches are symptom driven: "exterminator near me", "bed bug exterminator Toronto", "exterminateur Montreal". The Maps three pack and Local Services Ads take most first calls, and buyers then ring two or three companies and choose on same day availability, a quote that separates inspection from treatment, and a stated licence number.
Reviews filter that shortlist before anyone dials. BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey, a North American study, reports that most consumers read reviews regularly when picking a local business and that recency counts.
The market is small and mostly owner operated. Federal statistics for NAICS 56171, Pest Control Services, show an industry dominated by employers with fewer than 20 staff, concentrated in Ontario, then Quebec, British Columbia and Alberta. Orkin Canada, Rentokil Terminix Canada and Abell sit on top, but a well run independent still takes the three pack in most Canadian cities.
Ticks in April, wasps in July, mice in October
Most trades sell into one season. Pest control sells into four, each with its own buyer, price point and keyword set, so the media plan follows the calendar rather than the fiscal year.
- March to May. Carpenter and pavement ants, cluster flies waking, raccoons and skunks nesting, and first tick calls from April. Public Health Agency of Canada surveillance shows blacklegged tick range expanding and reported Lyme cases climbing steeply, which makes tick control a line worth its own page.
- June to August. Wasps build toward a late summer peak, with nest removal calls spiking in the first genuinely hot week of July, and Quebec's July 1 moving day concentrates Montreal bed bug demand. Orkin Canada's annual bed bug ranking has placed Toronto at or near the top for most of the past decade.
- September to November. Rodents are the largest surge of the year as temperatures drop, alongside boxelder bugs on sunny walls, while student moves push bed bug work up again and adult ticks return through October.
- December to February. Mice, rats, cockroaches and multi residential bed bugs carry the base load while commercial contracts carry cash flow, so this is the window for recurring plans, review generation and commercial outreach.
Wasp money has to stay liquid, because that spike follows the weather rather than the calendar, while bed bug coverage runs all twelve months and is the most valuable call your office takes.
The map pack, the Google Verified badge and the unmarked van
Set Pest Control Service as the profile's primary category and put your provincial licence number in the description: an Ontario operator licence, a BC pesticide user licence, an Alberta pesticide service registration or a Quebec C5 permit. Photograph technicians and an unmarked vehicle, because discretion is most of what a bed bug customer is buying.
Local Services Ads sit above the map, pest control is a supported home service category in Canada, and you pay per lead rather than per click once Google has screened licence and insurance. If you are working from older advice, note that Google folded the Guaranteed and Screened badges into a single Google Verified badge in October 2025 and retired the money back guarantee behind the old one, so confirm what is currently asked of pest control advertisers in your province.
Reviews need a routine.
- Ask by text on the day of the final visit, with a direct link to your Google form.
- Reply within two business days without naming the pest or the address.
- Never trade a discount for a review, which the Competition Bureau treats as deceptive marketing.
- Keep asking through winter, when competitors stop. Our guide to getting more Google reviews sets out the sequence.
Publish the PCP number, the guarantee term and who pays in a rental
Buyers arrive with a fixed checklist: licence, insurance, cost, speed and what happens if the pests come back. Build one page per pest and one per city, each carrying the licence number, a price range in CAD, whether the inspection fee is credited against treatment, the guarantee term, preparation instructions and a short FAQ block, with click to call above the fold.
Then add the page almost no operator publishes: who pays in a rental. As a general rule the landlord does, through the section 20 maintenance duty in Ontario's Residential Tenancies Act, the owner's habitability obligation under Quebec's Civil Code and the Residential Tenancy Branch's position in British Columbia, with tenants expected to cooperate on preparation and access. (Landlord and Tenant Board Tribunals Ontario) Much of your bed bug traffic is tenants who cannot book until that is answered, and the page also recruits the landlords who read it.
Canadian agencies price a template based conversion site from roughly CA$3,000 to CA$10,000, and a custom bilingual build higher. If a competitor publishes prices and licence numbers while you publish a stock photo of a cockroach, that rebuild is the highest return item here.
The pest by city grid, from empty rat terms in Calgary to termites in two pockets
Demand is a grid of pest by city: pest control Mississauga, mice exterminator Ottawa, rat control Vancouver, raccoon removal Toronto. Each cell needs its own page and reviews that name that pest, and Canadian geography changes the grid. Alberta has run a provincial Rat Control Program since 1950 and has kept the province effectively free of breeding rat populations, so rat terms in Calgary and Edmonton are close to empty while mouse work stays steady all winter. (Government of Alberta) Termites matter in pockets of southern Ontario and coastal British Columbia and almost nowhere else.
Quebec needs its own vocabulary rather than a translation plugin: exterminateur, extermination de punaises de lit, gestion parasitaire. Citations are Canadian too, from the Canadian Pest Management Association and your provincial association to HomeStars, with name, address and phone matching your licence record exactly. A single location local SEO program from a Canadian agency typically runs CA$1,000 to CA$3,500 a month.
Campaign structure by pest, priced in CAD
No independent Canadian study publishes pest control advertising costs. LocaliQ's benchmarks, US figures for the Home and Home Improvement category, convert to roughly CA$9 to CA$11 per click and CA$90 to CA$110 per lead. Pest control runs above that average, so treat the table as ranges to test against your own account.
| Benchmark | Typical range (CAD) | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Search cost per click, major metros | $10 to $25, emergency terms highest | Agency estimate |
| Search cost per lead | $60 to $180 by pest and season | Agency case studies |
| Local Services Ads cost per lead | $30 to $90 in metros | Canadian agency reports |
| Working media spend per metro | $1,500 to $3,000 monthly | Canadian agency pricing |
Structure the account around the pest rather than the service. Call only campaigns carry the emergency and wasp terms, where a ringing phone is the product and a form fill is a lost job. Per pest, per city campaigns carry the price range and licence number in the copy and point at the matching pest page. Paid social will never find the person with a wasp nest in the soffit, but it sells recurring plans by postal code. Our Google Ads management reports cost per booked job by pest.
Property managers, restaurant audits and the public health pages that refer
One property manager is worth dozens of consumer leads. Because the treatment obligation generally sits with the landlord, managers and condo boards hold recurring contracts and route tenant complaints to a preferred vendor, and restaurants need a documented program to pass a food safety audit, which puts reporting and logbooks in the pitch. Give each its own landing page covering contract terms, licences and response windows, and see our property management marketing guide for how that buyer thinks.
Toronto Public Health, Montreal's bed bug portal and Vancouver Coastal Health all tell residents to hire a licensed professional, so a verifiable licence record is what gets you found from there. Neighbourhood Facebook groups and city subreddits carry outsized weight for bed bug work, so make discretion an explicit promise.
Advertising, pesticide labelling and conduct rules for Canadian exterminators
This section is general information, not legal advice. Confirm details with your provincial regulator or a lawyer before changing your advertising.
Federal, pesticides. Under the Pest Control Products Act, only products registered by Health Canada's Pest Management Regulatory Agency may be used, and only as the label directs. Section 6 prohibits advertising that is likely to create an erroneous impression about a product's safety or registration, so drop safe, non toxic and harmless, and write registered by Health Canada, PCP No. (Department of Justice Canada Justice Laws Website) 12345, applied according to label directions.
Federal, Competition Act and CASL. Fake or incentivized reviews, undisclosed testimonials and drip pricing are deceptive marketing practices, and the June 2024 amendments require adequate and proper testing and substantiation for environmental claims, so eco friendly and pet safe are substantiation problems rather than taglines. Commercial email and texts need consent, identification and a working unsubscribe, and our CASL guide covers the consent periods to check before the September rodent send.
Ontario. The Pesticides Act and O. Reg. 63/09 require an operator licence for the business and a technician licence for supervised staff. (Government of Ontario) The cosmetic pesticides ban covers land exterminations on lawns and gardens rather than structural work, and exempts health and safety uses such as stinging insects and ticks, so wasp work is legal to advertise while a homeowner lawn spray program generally is not: operators who also sell lawn care should read our landscaping and snow removal guide first. (Government of Ontario) Wildlife sits under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, which limits how far a trapped animal may be relocated.
British Columbia and Alberta. BC's Integrated Pest Management Act requires a pesticide user licence and structural applicator certificates, and Alberta a pesticide service registration and certificates in the relevant class. (Government of British Columbia) Both provinces have municipal cosmetic pesticide bylaws that exempt licensed structural work, so check the bylaw before promoting exterior perimeter treatments.
Quebec. Extermination firms hold a Class C, subclass C5 permit under the provincial pesticide regime and technicians hold CD5 certificates. (Gouvernement du Québec) The Charter of the French Language, as amended by Bill 96, governs your website, advertising and signage, and since June 1, 2025 French must be markedly predominant on exterior signage carrying non French wording, which reaches vehicle lettering. Our Bill 96 guide covers the translation work, and Law 25 adds a privacy officer, a policy and cookie consent that change how remarketing tags are deployed.
Cost per booked job by pest, and the next 90 days
Judge every channel on cost per booked job by pest, not on clicks or form fills. A bed bug heat treatment and a single ant call are not worth the same money, and a blended cost per lead hides which of the two your budget is buying, so run call tracking and a source field on the work order.
| Days | Focus | Deliverables |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 30 | Foundation | Licence numbers on the Google profile; Local Services Ads verification; association and HomeStars listings; strip safe and eco friendly from all assets |
| 31 to 60 | Conversion | Pest pages with prices, guarantees and FAQs; the rental responsibility page; property manager and restaurant pages; French pages |
| 61 to 90 | Growth | Per pest campaigns for the season ahead; two city pages; the consent checked fall rodent email; ten property manager calls |

Frequently asked questions
- Can I call a pest control treatment safe, non toxic or pet friendly in a Canadian ad?
- No to safe, and be careful with the rest. Section 6 of the federal Pest Control Products Act bars advertising that creates an erroneous impression about a product's safety, which rules out safe, non toxic and harmless. Since the June 2024 Competition Act amendments, environmental and pet friendly claims need adequate and proper substantiation. Name the Health Canada registration and the PCP number, then describe your actual method.
- What should a booked job cost to acquire, and should ants and bed bugs carry the same target?
- No, set the target pest by pest. North American industry reporting puts small operators in the low single digits of revenue and growth stage firms materially higher, but those figures come from US surveys rather than a Canadian one. Build your own number: an acceptable cost per booked job on a bed bug heat treatment is several times what a single ant call can carry.
- Is there any point advertising rat control in Alberta?
- Very little. Alberta has run a provincial Rat Control Program since 1950 and has kept the province effectively free of breeding rat populations, patrolling a control zone along the Saskatchewan border, so rat searches in Calgary and Edmonton are thin. Put that budget on mice, wasps, bed bugs and commercial accounts, and keep one short rat sighting page for the rare case.
- Who pays for bed bug treatment in a rental, and should my website answer that?
- Publish it, because most of those searchers are tenants who cannot book until they know. As a general rule the landlord carries it: Ontario through the section 20 maintenance duty, Quebec through the owner's habitability obligation, British Columbia through the Residential Tenancy Branch's treatment of infestations. Tenants must still cooperate on preparation and access. Confirm the current position in your province.
