Painting Contractor Marketing in Canada: The Five Month Exterior Window
What Canadian painting contractors market against: a five month exterior cure window, strata repaint bids that turn on clearance certificates, franchise and student crews, and what a booked repaint costs in CAD.
Canadian homeowners search "painters near me", scan the map pack and read reviews before a website loads. BrightLocal's 2025 Local Consumer Review Survey, sampling Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom, found that about 91% of people read local reviews, 68% will not consider a business rated below four stars, and roughly three quarters discount reviews older than three months. Its early 2026 survey put AI assistant use for finding a local business at roughly 45% of consumers, up from about 6% a year earlier.
Word of mouth still anchors the trade: an Ownr survey found 55% of Canadians discovered their favourite local business through a personal recommendation, and exterior work advertises itself to the whole street. ISED counts roughly 19,000 painting and wall covering establishments in Canada, close to 69% with no employees. (Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada) Interior painting is also the most common do it yourself renovation here, so a homeowner with a roller competes with you.
Painting is not general contracting: a renovator sells one project to a homeowner who researched months, a painter sells a repaint to someone wanting three quotes this week. If you also carry drywall and permits, read our contractor and home services guide too.
The exterior window is five months, and it sets the whole media plan
Most exterior coatings need about 10 C and no freeze within 24 to 48 hours, so the usable window runs roughly late May to early September on the Prairies, late April to mid October in southern Ontario, and a rain limited stretch on the coast where dry time matters more than temperature. That is five months of exterior revenue, and the advertising that fills it has to run before it opens.
Run exterior quote campaigns from late February through May. Click costs peak in late spring, so a painter who fills the summer calendar in April pays less per lead than one bidding in June, by which point Calgary homeowners are finding calendars full. Move budget in July to interiors, cabinet refinishing, strata repaints and paint before you list work for agents. Interior demand peaks from September to November and again from January to March, and Quebec adds a July 1 moving day spike in turnover repaints. November to March is a different business, not a dead season: offices repainted after hours, condo corridors, cabinets refinished in a heated shop.
Google Business Profile: the Painter category and the neighbourhood photo habit
Set the primary category to Painter, add Commercial Painter or Cabinet Refinisher only if you genuinely sell them, and hide the street address if you work from home. Then upload before and after pairs weekly, labelled by neighbourhood and surface: stucco, aluminum siding, kitchen cabinets, stairwell trim. Ask for the review at the final walkthrough, while the homeowner stands in the finished room, then text the link that evening. Ask reviewers to name the job type and the area, because "exterior stucco in Kanata" is the phrase Google and AI assistants match. Our review guide has scripts.
A website that prices a 1,500 square foot interior before the phone rings
Most painter websites are a gallery with a phone number. The ones that book work lead with proof: rating, review count, insurance, and a note that a clearance certificate is available on request. Then they give price context, because cost queries are the highest volume painting searches here. HomeStars price guides put interior work around $2 to $4 per square foot for walls only and $3 to $5 with ceilings and trim, and exterior work around $3 to $6, with Toronto and Vancouver above the national average. Say whether that is plus HST, then answer the do it yourself objection with a page on prep, primer and two coat coverage.
Local SEO for cabinet refinishing, stucco and the pre 1960 house
The queries that turn into jobs are specific: "house painters Toronto", "exterior house painting Calgary", "condo painters", "cabinet painting", and in Quebec "peintre résidentiel" and "entrepreneur peintre Montréal". Build a page per service and per city you truly serve, each with photos shot there, since those pages are also what an AI assistant quotes when asked for a painter in Burlington.
Then write what homeowners read before they call: what a 1,500 square foot interior runs, how you contain lead paint in a pre 1960 house, what temperature exterior paint needs to cure. In Surrey, Brampton and Markham, a Punjabi, Cantonese or Mandarin page wins jobs an English only competitor never hears about. Our local SEO service suits single location trades.
What a painting click costs in Canada, and what a booked repaint costs
Painting is the priciest home service trade to advertise on search: LocaliQ's North American benchmarks rank it first for average cost per click among home service categories, and Canadian clicks cost less.
| Channel | Typical Canadian cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Google Search click | About $9 to $16 | Toronto $8 to $20, Calgary $4 to $10 |
| Google Search cost per lead | Roughly $90 to $240 | North American vendor data |
| Local Services Ads cost per lead | Roughly $65 | About a third of a search lead |
| Monthly ad budget | $1,000 to $3,000 in smaller markets, $2,500 to $5,000 in Toronto or Vancouver | Agency fees 10% to 30% of spend |
| Local SEO retainer | $500 to $2,500 a month | Single location trade |
Start with Local Services Ads if you qualify: they bill per lead and carry the Google Guaranteed badge once insurance and background checks are verified. Our cost per click benchmarks break these down by city.
HomeStars, MPI specifications and the strata repaint channel
HomeStars, owned by Angi, is the busiest Canadian review platform for home services and runs a post your job lead model, so a complete profile earns enquiries on its own. Houzz Canada listed roughly 1,500 painters in Ontario when we checked.
The channel worth more than any directory is the one most painters never build. A condominium corporation repaints its corridors on a cycle, and the manager buying that work wants a contractor who will not generate owner complaints, not the cheapest price. They ask for the same package every time, so assemble it once: a workers' compensation clearance document, a certificate of insurance naming the corporation as additional insured, a written safety policy, two comparable building references, and a Master Painters Institute specification you can bid to. A Red Seal painter and decorator endorsement carries weight there, as does membership in a body such as the Ontario Painting Contractors Association. Our property management guide shows how those firms pick trades.
CertaPro, WOW 1 DAY and the student crews that reset prices every May
CertaPro operates more than 350 locally owned businesses across Canada and the United States, and WOW 1 DAY Painting, founded in Vancouver, covers Metro Vancouver, much of the GTA and Calgary. They arrive with a branded folder, a uniformed estimator and a firm start date, so a handwritten quote reads as risk. Student crews apply the other pressure every May, at a price a career painter cannot match. Independents win neither on price, but by matching the franchise paperwork, warranty and start dates, then promising what a franchise cannot: the owner on site and the same two painters daily, named in the quote.
Advertising and conduct rules: clearances, lead paint and green claims
This section is general information and not legal advice. Confirm details with your provincial regulator or a lawyer before changing your contracts or your ads.
- Workers' compensation clearance. In Ontario, a party hiring a contractor for construction work, painting included, must obtain a WSIB clearance certificate first. (Workplace Safety and Insurance Board Ontario) WorkSafeBC and WCB Alberta letters do the same job, and Quebec's CNESST runs compliance verification services because a client who hires you can be left owing your unpaid contributions. Say "clearance certificate available on request", not "fully insured".
- Lead paint. Health Canada advises that homes built before 1960 very likely contain lead paint, that homes from 1960 to 1990 may have lead in exterior paint, and against dry sanding, heat guns and blowtorches. (Health Canada) Canada has no equivalent of the United States renovation, repair and painting rule, so no crew here is "EPA certified". Describe wet methods, containment and HEPA cleanup.
- Environmental claims. Bill C-59 amended the Competition Act in June 2024 to require environmental claims to rest on adequate and proper testing, with the burden on the advertiser, and the Competition Bureau issued final guidance in June 2025. (Competition Bureau Canada) Low VOC claims must match the labelled data.
- Discount and seasonal claims. The regular price behind a "30% off" spring promotion must pass the Competition Act's volume or time test, and advertising exterior painting year round outside coastal British Columbia promises what the cure temperature cannot deliver.
- CASL. Follow up email and texts need consent, sender identification and a working unsubscribe, and implied consent from an enquiry expires after six months. (Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission) Our CASL guide covers the mechanics.
- Ontario consumer protection. Agreements over $50 signed in the consumer's home must be in writing, buyers get a 10 day cooling off period, and you cannot bill more than 10% above a written estimate. (Government of Ontario) A replacement statute was not yet in force when we checked.
- Quebec. Painting for others for profit requires an RBQ licence, generally the finishing work subclass, and the number belongs on quotes and ads. (Régie du bâtiment du Québec) Painters in the province's construction sector also hold a CCQ competency certificate, worth naming in bids. Since 1 June 2025, Law 14, commonly called Bill 96, requires sites, social content and ads aimed at Quebec to be in French at a standard at least equal to any other language. Our Bill 96 guide says what to translate first.
Measure quote to close, then work back from the spring rush
Track five numbers monthly: profile calls and directions, new reviews and rating, quote requests by source, quote to booked rate, and cost per booked job by channel. Painters lose more work to slow replies than to dear clicks, so track time to first response. A $120 lead closed one time in three is a $360 booked job, and answering faster moves it more than cutting the bid.
- Days 1 to 30. Fix the profile, add 30 photos tagged by neighbourhood and surface, ask for a review at every final walkthrough, and put proof, price ranges and a photo upload quote form on the site.
- Days 31 to 60. Publish service pages for interior, exterior, cabinet and strata work, plus city pages for your strongest areas. Complete HomeStars and Houzz, apply for Local Services Ads, assemble the bid package, and in Quebec launch the French site.
- Days 61 to 90. Turn on search campaigns for your top three services with call tracking, build the budget calendar backwards from your exterior window, and cut whatever has not booked a job.

Frequently asked questions
- How many Google reviews does a painting contractor in Canada need?
- There is no magic number. Marketing vendors that work with painting contractors report that crews past 50 Google reviews field more calls than those under 20, though that is vendor data rather than an independent benchmark. Recency counts as much as volume, since BrightLocal found roughly three quarters of consumers discount reviews older than three months. Aim for four to six new reviews a month, each naming the job type and neighbourhood.
- What does it cost to win one booked repaint in Canada?
- Work from cost per lead back to cost per booked job. Canadian painting clicks typically run about $9 to $16, search leads roughly $90 to $240, and Local Services Ads leads closer to $65, converted from North American vendor data. Close one quote in three and a $120 lead becomes a $360 booked job, so your quote to close rate moves the number more than your bid does.
- Can a Canadian painting crew advertise itself as lead safe or EPA certified?
- Not EPA certified. Canada has no equivalent of the United States renovation, repair and painting rule, so the credential does not exist here. Health Canada says homes built before 1960 very likely contain lead paint and warns against dry sanding, heat guns and blowtorches, so describe what you actually do: testing, wet methods, containment and HEPA cleanup. General information, not legal advice.
- Our exterior season is five months. What do we sell from November to March?
- Interior and commercial work, sold before the exterior window closes. Coatings generally need about 10 C and no freeze for 24 to 48 hours, so exterior revenue runs roughly late May to early September on the Prairies and late April to mid October in southern Ontario. Winter pays through cabinet refinishing, offices repainted after hours, condo corridors and pre listing interiors for agents.
