Auto Repair Marketing in Canada: Tire Season, Estimate Rules and Cost Per Repair Order

How Canadian repair and tire shops win work in 2026: the two changeover peaks, provincial estimate rules, CAA and banner channels, Quebec's OPC sign requirement, and marketing measured per repair order.

BB Better Businesses Updated 9 min read

A driver with a grinding brake does not research shops for a week. They type "mechanic near me" into a phone and judge the three map pack results on star rating, review count, distance and whether it says "Open now". BrightLocal's 2025 Local Consumer Review Survey found that more than eight in ten consumers use Google to read reviews. For most Canadian shops the Google Business Profile, not the website, is the storefront.

Trust is the purchase anxiety here. Buyers ask a city subreddit who the honest mechanic is, look for the CAA, AMA or BCAA Approved Auto Repair Services shield, and phone two or three shops about diagnostic fees and lead time. A dealer customer becomes available at the first out of warranty repair, which is why second opinion messaging pulls so well.

ISED's Canadian Industry Statistics count roughly 30,000 employer businesses in automotive repair and maintenance, almost all with fewer than 20 staff, and analysts such as DesRosiers report the average vehicle on Canadian roads is roughly a decade old. One source of guaranteed traffic has gone: Ontario ended the Drive Clean emissions test for light vehicles on 1 April 2019 and Metro Vancouver's AirCare closed at the end of 2014. (Government of Ontario) Safety Standards Certificates and out of province inspections now have to be marketed rather than legislated into your schedule.

Winning the map pack for "mechanic near me" and changeover searches

Work the profile like a product page. The primary category (Auto repair shop, Tire shop, Brake shop, Oil change service) decides which map pack you appear in, so set it precisely, then list every service: changeover, storage, alignment, diagnostics, Safety Standards Certificate, out of province inspection, hybrid and EV work. Two breaches can get a profile suspended for weeks: keyword stuffing the name, and gating or paying for reviews.

Recency beats lifetime totals, because a driver reads the last month and checks whether the owner replied. Run reviews as a process:

  1. Capture a mobile number and written consent to text on the work order.
  2. Send one request within an hour of pickup, while the car still drives better than that morning.
  3. Point to Google first, then to your CAA or banner profile.
  4. Reply within two business days, naming the vehicle and the repair.
  5. Never offer a discount or a draw entry for a review.

The negative review about a quote is the one that sells, if you answer it with your estimate process and warranty. Our guide to getting more Google reviews covers the wording.

Publish the diagnostic fee, the labour rate and the warranty

Three numbers decide whether a caller books: the diagnostic fee, the hourly rate, and what happens if the repair fails. Post all three. Say whether the diagnostic fee is credited when work is approved, publish typical prices for a changeover on rims versus mount and balance, for storage and for an alignment, and state the warranty: 90 days or 5,000 km minimum in Ontario, three months on parts and labour in Quebec. Add the proof this trade runs on: Red Seal certification, CAA approval, banner affiliation, and photo based digital inspections showing the worn pad. Connect booking to your shop management system so the slot a customer picks is real. That is what website development should deliver for a shop.

Local SEO when your catchment is ten minutes wide

Few customers drive past two other shops to reach you, so your local SEO is a small map, densely covered. Build service plus neighbourhood pages with real detail about parking, shuttle range and turnaround, not cloned pages for towns you never serve. Keep name, address and phone identical across yp.ca, Apple Maps, your banner locator and your CAA listing. Add AutoRepair and FAQ structured data, since AI assistants summarise local options from those sources. Punjabi, Cantonese or Tagalog service pages win real share in parts of the GTA and Metro Vancouver. That is local SEO for a shop.

LocaliQ's 2025 benchmarks, drawn from US campaigns and so directional for Canada, put automotive repair among the cheapest categories per lead, near US$30 with conversion rates around 14%. The Canadian figures below are agency and shop owner estimates, not audited benchmarks.

Line item Typical range (CAD) Note
Cost per click, repair keywords about $4 to $6 Higher in Toronto, Vancouver
Cost per lead (call or booking) about $30 to $60 From US benchmarks
Ad spend, single location $800 to $3,000 monthly Spikes in tire season

Against an average repair order that shop software benchmarks put at roughly $350 to $600, a $45 lead pays for itself on the first visit. Structure campaigns tightly: brand, near me, seasonal tire, ad groups for your strongest imports, and a dealer alternative campaign for owners just out of factory warranty. Negative out job seekers, parts buyers and DIY searches, and set the radius by drive time. See how we run Google Ads for shops.

CAA approval, banner programs and tire maker locators

CAA, AMA and BCAA Approved Auto Repair Services membership puts you in a locator members search on purpose. Running since 1975, it covers more than 2,000 Canadian facilities and backs member repairs with a one year, 20,000 km warranty. (CAA South Central Ontario) Approval is not a badge you buy: clubs audit shops, survey customers and send mystery shoppers, which is why drivers trust the shield more than anything you design.

NAPA AutoPro and Bumper to Bumper, the latter part of LKQ since its 2023 purchase of Uni-Select, supply warranty backing, a store finder and usually co-operative advertising support; ask your jobber for current co-op terms. Tire manufacturer dealer locators send high intent traffic in season if you hold the right tier. Lead marketplaces behave here as they do for seasonal trades, and our landscaping and snow removal guide sets out how to judge them. Fleet work from trades, couriers and municipal contractors is won by direct outreach and turnaround, not reviews.

Estimate, licensing and advertising rules for Canadian repair shops

This is general information, not legal advice. Confirm current requirements with your provincial regulator or a lawyer.

Ontario. The Consumer Protection Act, 2002 and its motor vehicle repair regulation require a written estimate on request, cap the final charge at 10% above it, bar charging for unauthorised work, and set a minimum warranty of 90 days or 5,000 km. (Government of Ontario) A successor Act passed in 2023 carries the rules forward but had not been proclaimed in force as this was written. Only a Motor Vehicle Inspection Station licensed by the Ministry of Transportation may advertise safety inspections, and since Automotive Service Technician is a compulsory trade, a "licensed technicians" claim must be literally true.

Alberta and British Columbia. Alberta shops need an AMVIC automotive business licence and must advertise under the licensed name, so the name on your profile should match the licence. (Alberta Motor Vehicle Industry Council) British Columbia has no repair specific estimate statute, so a published estimate policy is a differentiator there rather than a compliance item.

Federal. The Competition Act prohibits misleading representations, drip pricing (shop supplies and environmental levies belong in the advertised price), fake or incentivised reviews and, since the June 2024 amendments, unsubstantiated claims such as "eco friendly oil change". Service reminder emails and texts fall under CASL, which our CASL guide explains in full. You may say you service a make, but not use manufacturer logos in a way that implies dealer status.

Quebec runs on the OPC posted sign and the $100 estimate

Quebec is a separate regime, and the paperwork it imposes is the best trust marketing a shop can get. Under the Consumer Protection Act, enforced by the Office de la protection du consommateur, a garage must post a sign in plain view, at least 100 cm by 50 cm, showing its hourly labour rate and a summary of the customer's repair rights, and must give a written estimate before starting work expected to cost more than $100. (Office de la protection du consommateur Quebec) Charging above the estimate is barred and repairs carry a legal warranty of three months. Put that sign, the hourly rate and the estimate policy on your French landing page.

The Charter of the French Language, as amended by Bill 96, requires advertising, websites, booking flows and customer communications aimed at Quebec to be available in French, and since 1 June 2025 storefront signage using a non French trademark must give French markedly predominant space, roughly twice the visual area. Build French ad groups pointing at French landing pages, not a translation plugin, and use the words drivers type: pneus d'hiver, entreposage de pneus, changement de pneus. Our Bill 96 marketing guide has the checklist, and Law 25 adds consent duties for tracking.

Build the year around the two changeover peaks

Seasonal peak selling works as it does for the seasonal trades in the guide linked above; what follows is specific to tires. The fall peak runs from about mid October into early December, forced in Quebec by the Highway Safety Code rule that registered vehicles carry winter tires from 1 December to 15 March, and started earlier in British Columbia by its 1 October requirement on designated highways. (Government of British Columbia) (Gouvernement du Québec)

The spring peak runs from mid March, when the Quebec mandate lifts on the 15th and every stored set has to come off, through April, bringing pothole season alignment work and, in Ontario, Safety Standards Certificate demand as private used car sales pick up. Load budget and publish landing pages four to six weeks ahead of each peak, so early September and mid February. Sell storage hard in the fall, because every set in your racks is a booked spring appointment. Key January campaigns to batteries and block heaters, and spend the February lull on reviews and fleet outreach.

Cost per repair order, and the 90 days before changeover

Most leads arrive as phone calls, so set up call tracking, keep your main number on the profile, use dynamic numbers on the website, and match leads by source to repair orders in your shop software. Divide monthly marketing cost by booked repair orders and compare that against your average repair order and labour gross profit. Watch how many first time customers return within twelve months.

Period Focus What to complete
Days 1 to 30 Foundations Fix profile category, services, hours and photos; start review requests at pickup; correct yp.ca, Apple Maps and CAA listings; publish rates and warranty
Days 31 to 60 Conversion Ship online booking and click to call; build pages for your top five jobs and top three makes; publish French pages and the estimate policy
Days 61 to 90 Demand capture Launch search campaigns with call tracking; build changeover and storage pages; apply for CAA approval; report spend against repair orders

Where Better Businesses fits

Most shops do not need more marketing. They need the profile, the reviews, the site, the provincial paperwork and the changeover calendar working as one system, in that order. That is the work Better Businesses does for owner operated shops across Canada, in English and French.

Frequently asked questions

What is a reasonable marketing cost per repair order in Canada?
Work backwards from your average repair order, which shop software benchmarks put at roughly $350 to $600, and from your labour gross profit. If gross profit on an average ticket sits near $200, spending $40 to $60 to book that repair order still pays on the first visit and better on the second. Track it monthly, not by campaign.
What do Quebec's repair rules require in my advertising and on my website?
More than translation. Quebec's Consumer Protection Act, enforced by the Office de la protection du consommateur, requires a posted sign showing your hourly rate and customer repair rights, and a written estimate for work expected to exceed $100. Bill 96 requires French advertising, websites and booking flows. This is general information, not legal advice.
Can I advertise a free diagnostic or a flat rate brake price in Ontario?
Yes, if the offer survives the repair rules. Ontario requires a written estimate on request, caps the final charge at 10% above it, and bars charging for unauthorised work, so an advertised flat rate has to include shop supplies and levies or the Competition Act's drip pricing provisions apply. Say what the price covers. This is general information, not legal advice.
When should a shop start advertising for the fall changeover?
Load budget and publish landing pages four to six weeks before demand, so early September for a peak that runs from about mid October into early December. Quebec requires winter tires from 1 December to 15 March, and British Columbia requires them on designated highways from 1 October. Sell storage during the peak, because every stored set is a booked spring appointment.
